Victorian Curriculum outcome : Graph simple non-linear relations with and without the use of digital technologies and solve simple related equations

Task description : Students use NumberPlumber to open examples of non-linear equations. The task is twofold: they need to drop enough numbers in to discover the shape of the curve that they then sketch. Students choose four examples and sketch the curve, write the formula for each curve. Eg y = 3x. They also identify features such as axes of symmetry, x and y intercepts, and turning points. They then change coefficients of the original non-linear equations. They do this twice. Thus, there are a total of twelve graphs and twelve equations to record.

Assessment options : Photographs of the straw triangles constructed for each set of conditions. Handwritten or typed responses to the questions.

Teacher notes : Get familiar with number plumber before attempting this task.
