Victorian Curriculum outcome : Introduce the Cartesian coordinate system using all four quadrants

Task description : Students play the game “Cops’n’Robbers” on the nrich website. They must play on level 2 to meet the standard. They play 5 games, recording the coordinates they choose on a Cartesian plane and well as in the form (x,y), as well as why they chose that particular point.

Assessment options : Worksheet template; screencast or screenshots.

Teacher notes : This task, while introducing the straightforward concept of the Cartesian plane, has quite a number of layers to it. Encourage students to explain why they have chosen certain points, and if the choices aren’t consistent with the information they already have, encourage them to analyse their choice in these terms. For students who want an extra challenge, level 3 is very worthwhile. Avoid students playing levels 1 or 4.
