Semester 2 Topic 7 Level I

Task Name : Golf Course Angles Task Level : I (Year 8)
Semester : 2 Topic : Angles VC Strand : Geometric Reasoning
Web Address : http://maths.crusoecollege.vic.edu.au/grI
Equipment Needed : Stiff card (a roll of corrugated cardboard is usually purchased), rulers, protractors.
Victorian Curriculum outcome : Establish properties of quadrilaterals using  congruent triangles and angle properties, and solve related numerical problems using reasoning
Task description : Use the holes created in level H or create new holes: kite, trapezium, parallelogram and rhombus. Divide each quadrilateral into two. Use rules for congruence to decide if the triangles that form the quadrilaterals are congruence. Use a different rule for each quadrilateral (SSS, SSA, ASA, student’s choice for the 4th shape).
Assessment options : Photographs of Golf Course Holes
Teacher notes : Students tend to make the holes too small to measure accurately: a hole should be around half the size of an A4 sheet of paper. Encourage students to use colour or even little props to make their holes a bit more interesting and creative.
