|Task Name : Census@School
|Task Level : K (Year 10)
|Semester : 2
|Topic : Data
|VC Strand : Data
|Web Address : http://maths.crusoecollege.vic.edu.au/dataK
|Equipment Needed : Access to the Census@school website; access to Excel or equivalent
|Victorian Curriculum outcome : Determine quartiles and interquartile range. Construct and interpret box plots and use them to compare data sets. Compare shapes of box plots to corresponding histograms and dot plots. Use scatter plots to investigate and comment on relationships between two numericalVariables. Investigate and describe bivariate numerical data where the independent variable is time.
|Task description : This task has two parts: 2013 analysis (a dot plot, a histogram, a box plot, and a paragraph explaining what differences are there in what the plots tell you); and 2013 to previous year comparison (Two box plots and a paragraph explaining what the box plots tell you about how the variable has changed over time). There are four videos: one for the task, and one each for: making a dot plot in excel, making a histogram in excel and making a box plot in excel.
|Assessment options : Excel spreadsheet or screenshots
Teacher notes : This task uses the census@school website – familiarising yourself with it is helpful before introducing the task.
Because the ABS has discontinued the CAS, we need another source of data. There is an international CAS with a random sampler here:
