Equipment Needed : None
Victorian Curriculum outcome : Expand binomial products and factorise monic quadratic expressions using a variety of strategies
Task description : Students design 5 backyards, made up of two squares, one inside the other. The area of the larger square can be calculated using difference of perfect squares. Students express each backyard as a factorised equation, quadratic equation and diagram. Include a sample area calculation for each.
Assessment options : Photographs of designs; digital versions of designs.
Teacher notes : Non-monic quadratic designs are much more challenging – ask students to incorporate some in their designs, for example, 9×2-25. |
