Equipment Needed : Photocopies of tenths, hundredths and thousandths squares. Sixteen doughnut puzzle pieces. |
Victorian Curriculum outcome : Connect fractions, decimals and percentages and carry out simple conversions. |
Task description : Students create the doughnut puzzle that is the task for level G by creating four four-domino doughnuts where the meeting ends are equivalent. The proviso is that none of the fractions, decimals or percentages they use in their own puzzle can be present in the original level G puzzle. Once they have done this, they prove each connection using decimal and fraction squares. |
Assessment options : Photograph of doughnuts with proofs. |
Teacher notes : Students may struggle to find simple percentage, fraction and decimal conversions. Encourage them to see that if one tenth is 0.1 and 10%, then one twentieth must be 5% and 0.05. Using multiples of twentieths can fill up most of the required pairs. |
