Semester 1 Topic 5 Level I

Task Name : Real Life Rates and Ratios Task Level : I (Year 8)
Semester : 1 Topic : Comparing Fractions VC Strand : Real Numbers
Web Address : http://maths.crusoecollege.vic.edu.au/rnI
Equipment Needed : None
Victorian Curriculum outcome : Solve a range of problems involving rates and ratios, with and without digital technologies
Task description : .Students identify ten examples of ratios and six examples of rates found in real life. Examples can be found in the video. Of the ten examples of ratio, five should be size comparisons, five should be number comparisons, five should involve simplification and five should involve making a prediction. Again, examples of these can be found in the video. Of the six examples of rates, three should involve calculating a rate, three should involve using a rate to make a prediction, and there should be one graph associated with one of the rates.ย  Again, the video gives examples of these.
Assessment options : Photographic evidence of the rates and ratios encountered in real life.
Teacher notes : Introduce the two concepts โ€“ rates and ratios โ€“ separately. Websites on sports statistics can be useful in engaging sports-focussed students.
