Task Name : Crusoe Estate |
Task Level : G (Grade 6) |
Semester : 1 |
Topic : Perimeter and Area |
VC Strand : Units of Measurement |

Equipment Needed : Poster Paper |
Victorian Curriculum outcome : Solve problems involving the comparison of lengths and areas using appropriate units |
Task description : Students design eight different rectangular blocks of land and calculate the perimeter and area of each. If they are using a scale drawing, 1cm should be equivalent to 1m. Students calculate the cost for each block of land based on area ($100/m2) and perimeter (the blocks of land need to be fenced, at a cost of $200/m). They need to find which block of land is the best value, by altering only one dimension of the rectangle. |
Assessment options : Scale drawing on poster paper or cardboard; Google SketchUp model. |
Teacher notes : Ensure students using Google SketchUp are using it correctly and do not waste time adding unnecessary detail to their models. For scale drawings, the scale of 1cm = 1m means fairly small blocks of land, but it avoids further confusion with converting scale. The best value block of land should be a square. |
