 Task Name : Index Laws Card Game Task Level : I (Year 8) Semester : 1 Topic : Multiples and Indices VC Strand : Number and Place Value Web Address : http://maths.crusoecollege.vic.edu.au/npvI Equipment Needed : Stiff cardboard to make the cards; scissors Victorian Curriculum outcome : Use index notation with numbers to establish the index laws with positive integral indices and the zero index Task description : Students use the index laws to make a concentration style card game. Students should use 24 cards, meaning there are 12 equations they need to show. Only four bases may be used so that the player can find the matching pairs based purely on the bases. All four index laws should be used in creating the cards. To extend students, ask them how they can make the game more challenging to play by incorporating other kinds of equivalence. e.g. x3 ÷ x3 = y-3 × y3 Assessment options : Photograph of the cards, video of a game being played Teacher notes : Get the students to play each other’s games for practice.
